ROARSOME NEW PREDATORS ARRIVE FOR EXPLORER’S WEEK

Release Date: Tuesday 22 May 2018

Lionfish

Staff at SeaQuarium Rhyl are looking forward to hosting their annual Explorer’s Week and this year are excited to be welcoming four new lionfish, just in time for May half term.

Given its name due to its mane-like appearance similar to a male lion, these venomous creatures have been introduced to the Night Hunters Zone of the aquarium and are settling in well.

The new arrivals coincide with the attraction’s Explorer’s Week, where budding explorers can join adventurer Livingstone on his exciting journey around the aquarium from 26 May until 3 June. Guests can also complete a tricky trail of clues to find animals around the centre, earning themselves a prize and Explorer’s badge upon completion.

Natalie Lewis, Aquarist, said: “The lionfish itself is a top predator on Pacific coral reefs, meaning very few animals consider it for lunch in the ocean. The striped vivid colour bands that warn off potential attackers become obscured in low light; a pity for their prey.”

She continued: “This species tends to feed around sunset when other animals are heading home for the night. To match its natural environment, we have displayed the new additions in a darkened area of the centre.”

During the week, guests will have the opportunity to watch the lionfish being fed and witness how their huge mouths act like vacuum cleaners. Various talks and demonstrations will also take place, where guests are invited to learn more about the weird and wonderful oceans and get up close and personal to some creepy crawlies!

To reflect the Explorer’s theme, daily seal shows and craft sessions will be available. Every explorer needs a telescope and a hat, so guests are welcomed to make their own and join in with the fun. Livingstone the Explorer will be making regular appearances to check how guests are getting on with their crafts and underwater adventures!
